Our Recycling Initiative
I recently came across the statistic that BC's flexible plastic recovery rate is only 20%1. This means that for every 10 items that are produced by Recycle BC registered stewards, only 2 of them actually get recycled. The rest, 80%1, are filling up our landfills.
The good news is that this is merely a logistical issue. Flexible plastics ARE recyclable2. There are just not enough effective solutions to transport flexible plastics from residential homes to our local recycling centres. Once the flexible plastics reach these recycling centres, they are turned into plastic pellets and used to create new products. So how can we solve this logistical problem?
Our Solution
Our family participates in the CRD curbside blue box program. We also collect a number of items that can only be recycled at local depots. Every few months, my husband transports these other recyclables to the Hartland landfill for proper disposal. Why not share the love and open this trip up to other community members that may not have the time or resources to do it themselves? How much waste can we divert from the landfill by bridging this logistical gap?
Current Collection Process:

With 80%1 of our flexible plastics going straight to the landfill, we are proposing an alternative solution...
Proposed Collection Process:

Our family will collect your flexible plastics from your doorstep and take them to a local recycling center. From there, your plastic will be recycled into pellets and manufactured into new consumer products!
Upcoming Events
Our family recently completed our Earth Day 2025 recycling event. The event was an experiment to determine the level of interest and need for flexible plastic collection in our local community. We are pleased to announce that this event was successful, diverting 2m³ of recyclable waste from the landfill. Given the positive response, our family will be organizing another collection event in the future. Please subscribe to our mailing list to stay informed!
